Good to know
Questions, answered.
Who should get the chicken pox vaccine?
The varicella vaccine is recommended for anyone 1 year or older who has never had chickenpox or been vaccinated before. It's especially valuable for adults, healthcare workers, and parents of young children. A simple conversation with our pharmacist will confirm it's right for you.
Why do I need two doses?
The varicella vaccine requires two doses given 4–6 weeks apart to ensure reliable, long-term protection. A single dose may not be enough to guard against infection.
What are the side effects?
Most people experience minimal side effects. Common mild reactions include soreness at the injection site, low-grade fever, or a slight rash. Serious side effects are very rare. Our pharmacist will explain what to expect and how to manage any discomfort.
How long does the protection last?
The varicella vaccine is designed to give long-lasting immunity. Studies show protection lasts for at least 10–20 years, and likely much longer or even lifelong in many people.
Can I get the vaccine if I'm pregnant?
No, the varicella vaccine is a live vaccine and is not recommended during pregnancy. If you're planning to become pregnant, it's best to complete both doses at least 28 days before conception. Please discuss your circumstances with our pharmacist.
Is it safe to have the vaccine if I've had chicken pox before?
If you've already had chicken pox, you're naturally immune and don't need the vaccine. Our pharmacist can help confirm whether vaccination is needed based on your history.
