You are eligible for the free NHS Meningitis B (MenB) vaccine if you fall into one of these specific groups: • Aged 17 or 18 years old: Born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008. • Starting University in Autumn 2026: Under 25 years old (born on or after 21 July 2001) and starting an undergraduate degree for the first time. • Starting Residential Further Education in Autumn 2026: Under 25 years old (born on or after 21 July 2001) and moving into residential college accommodation or military basic training for the first time.
How many doses do I need?
The primary course is two doses, given four weeks apart. After the two-dose course, you'll have strong protection against meningitis B.
Is it safe? What side effects might I get?
The meningitis B vaccine is safe and has been used millions of times worldwide. Common mild side effects include soreness or redness at the injection site, mild fever, or tiredness for a day or two. Serious side effects are very rare. If you have any concerns, we're happy to discuss them before your appointment.
Can I have the vaccine if I'm on other medications?
In most cases, yes. However, if you're on certain medicines (such as immunosuppressants) or have specific health conditions, this may affect timing. We'll ask about your full medical history when you book.
What should I expect during my appointment?
We'll check your health details and allergies, answer any questions, then give you the injection in your upper arm. The whole appointment takes about 10 minutes. You can go about your day normally afterwards.
Do I need to do anything after my vaccine?
No special care is needed. You can resume normal activities straight away. Drink plenty of water and take paracetamol if you have mild soreness or fever. If you develop any unusual symptoms, contact us or your GP.
